Our Speaker was Dr. Linnea Smith. She got her medical degree at Madison in 1984. In 1990 she went to visit the Amazon Rain Forest and it “Got Her”. Since then, she has generally spent half a year in Peru and half a year in Black Earth. Last March, she just made it back to Wisconsin before the borders closed due to the pandemic. It has been difficult running the clinic from the US without good cell service in SA. She feels stuck in the USA, but it is not safe to go back.
Linnea presented a power point program about the clinic.
This part of the meeting was recorded and is available in two parts.
Part 2:
Linnea described to us that markets have been the center of the spread of Covid 19 in South America, telling us of the huge ongoing difficulties in Peru. Medical supplies were used up. She wants to go back but not until she gets her vaccines.
La Doctora (Linnea Smith) described how Rotary Grants helped build her clinics with matching grants. Things are tough in Peru with 1/3rd of the economy dependent on tourism and is really non-existent because of the closed borders.
