Norsk News 7/10

First meeting of the new fiscal year. 

President’s mission this year is building the bridge between the club and the students. He encouraged us to come by and see the students doing their activities at school.

Guests: Ivy and Sophia Christiansen, and Kurt Adler.

Heidi shared that Tammy was involved in an auto accident in Darlington Friday (nephew’s memorial golf outing) she sustained some injuries and is healing. Her daughter’s wedding is in less than 2 weeks.

Susan Wallitsch had surgery and is recovering at home and accepting guests.

Svetlana is in Milwaukee becoming a citizen of the United States. 

Karla's update: have been boating in Lake Monona, did some tubing, saw o a rodeo in Galena, is spending a lot of money. She went strawberry picking, made jam and sauce. She is working on her presentation for next week. She is leaving for Michigan for a Rotary trip.

Kurt Adler is here because he was a grant recipient $1900 for the Mt. Horeb softball club. There are 110 girls, 10 teams. Varsity team won conference. Improvements to fencing will be made, there is a second batting cage and he appreciates the support from the club.

Happy Bucks:
Sarah is happy to have made her traditional family summer road trip and is happy to announce their family has visited all the 48 states, and the minivan made it. 2 weeks, 5,000 miles and 89 hours together in the van.

Judy is happy her grand daughter is in Hawaii with a middle school youth orchestra group.

Russ: Clementine did world affairs seminar and loved it.

Keith left Thousand CPA and moved to a new position with a Premier Retirement Partners.

Announcements:
Mount Horeb Public Library gave us a thank you card for the grant for a contemplative garden and Jessica will be presenting here 7/30. The grant ask includes request for labor Thursday and Friday with help (4-6 people) to help assemble furniture.

Membership services: Doug Kahl has retired from the club due to work pressures with lots of traveling.

Rename: member services is the new name instead of Public Relations, Social, Membership committee. Liz is looking for help with putting together the Norsk News. Anyone who has technical experience who is interested in learning how to put bulletins together in ClubRunner please let Steve know.

New teacher luncheon: Taco Bar is back! Week after the 10k raffle, August 21 at the Violet Room.

This year we will have a guest speaker so plan extra time.

Fundraising: 10K raffle: 150/250 tickets have been sold. If you have friends, neighbors or anyone interested in attending we have available tickets now that right of first refusal is over. Contact Paul if you can pick up the slack for selling tickets of contacts that Tammy had worked with.

New Generations: Keith will be taking over, Judy will stay on until the end of Karla’s stay.

There is an opening for the youth exchange officer, a role that provides support for our exchange student coming for 2025-2026. The position involves trouble shooting, and helping our exchange student adjust. Training and support will be provided by Rotary. We need to have that position in place prior to having our exchange student. There will be a background check and some training modules involved in the position. It will be a great way for new members to get involved. Judy adds that meeting the host families is a great experience.

Joey came back from his year abroad in Brazil July 2nd.

Karla leaves the 28th of July. 2 students went to student affairs program.

Grant committee: update on district grant for the Marc center, we need to get a partner club involved to help put together a new kitchen at the new facility. They are asking for $15k. Next step would be to find another partner club.

Peggy has kept us informed on the grant with the school for Ukraine refugees in Hungary. The project is in a holding program, most likely for compliance or red tape. World grants can take a long time, but it is a thorough program with several checks and balances.

Treasurer’s report: balances are in the agenda. Requests for dues have been sent out.
